Follow these tips to protect your home during a hurricane or strong storm
The Atlantic hurricane season isn’t known for weakness, and once the season begins, there’s no telling what strong storms are going to sweep the coast. In Tampa, we’ve seen our fair share of high winds, flooding, and destruction following one of these powerful events. As hurricane season creeps in the horizon, we thought we’d use this space to talk about some of the precautions homeowners should take before one of these storms takes bay. BMCI Contracting always urges caution and proper preparation before any dangerous event.
Board Up Windows
The fast and powerful winds brought on by a storm can carry objects through the air and straight through your glass windows and doors. Before a storm, board up the windows with plywood or other materials in case something like this happens. Securely fasten these boards to the outside of the window to protect your home from flying objects. Broken glass during a hurricane or windstorm is the last thing you want to deal with, and our home roofing company urges you to take this simple precaution.
Prepare the Household
When an upcoming storm is setting afoot on the Gulf Coast, the last thing you want to do is be unprepared. Every house should have extra food that won’t go bad, flashlights, bottled water, blankets, a copy of their house insurance, a first aid kit, and a plan in case of evacuation. Leaving your home during a storm isn’t recommended and it’s normally quite dangerous. Having a plan for you and your household is absolutely necessary!
Secure the Home
Before hurricane season comes around the corner, secure the outside of the house. If there is loose paneling on the home, or the shingles on your roof needs to be fixed, don’t wait until the last minute to make fixes. As a residential roofing company, we’ve made plenty of repairs that could have easily been prevented by proper roof maintenance. Be sure to call BMCI Contracting for a roofing contractor to make sure that your roof is secure.
Schedule Wind Mitigation
The high winds are the most damaging aspect of a hurricane and not preparing your home could be especially detrimental. Wind mitigation is a service that inspects your home and roof for things that are susceptible to wind damage. Securing the outside of your home so that it won’t be as vulnerable during a hurricane is one of the most important preventative protection steps. While BMCI Contracting is available to make roof repairs to people in the Tampa area, we can’t urge you enough to have your home secured before damages could even be possible.
Thank you for reading today’s post, and we hope that you’ll take the necessary precautions to keep you, your home, and your household protected. Follow these steps before hurricane season makes its way to Tampa. For wind mitigation, please call BMCI Contracting and we’ll set up an appointment!
